Print of the Month - May 2021
Published by John Snow in 1843 as the frontispiece to Ebenezer Prout’s book; "Memoirs of the Life of the Rev. John Williams, Missionary to Polynesia."
Under the print on the left in one line engraved is “Drawn and Engraved by G. Baxter, 3, Charterhouse Square.”
Lower down, in imitation of Williams’ writing, is: “For my part I cannot content myself within the narrow limits of a single reef,” followed by an imitation of Williams’ signature.
Below that is: “London, John Snow, Paternoster Row.”
George Baxter produced eight different subjects of the Reverend John Williams.
This particular subject was never printed in colour and is engraved in line and stipple, which is a somewhat rare method for Baxter.
Steel engraving, size c. 22.5 x 14 cm.
