Print of the Month - January 2017

This print was published by George Baxter in 1857. Catalogued by Courtney Lewis as CL 276.

Baxter Process Print, size 38 x 28 cm.

Signed on the left in 4 lines, “Published March 10th, 1857, by G. Baxter, Proprietor & Patentee, London.”

It was originally sold for 10s. 6d.

Companion print to CL 375 (“The Gardener's Shed”), and after a painting by V. Bartholomew.

Bartholomew married Miss Hullmandel, and was a great-uncle of Mr. Dendy, the Registrar of the Newcastle-on-Tyne County Court, and he relates how that artist painted the original pictures of this subject and CL 275 in the garden of his father at Yarmouth, and that the scenery in the background of both was “borrowed.”

Produced from a steel plate and eleven colour blocks.

Also printed by Le Blond after Baxter sold the plates when his business closed. The absence of Baxter’s signature sufficiently distinguishes the one print, from the other.
